Why Grok is winning the Frontier Model war.

Most people probably don’t agree with the statement that Grok is winning the Frontier Model war, but most people haven’t used Grok extensively. In this article I will explain my approach to ranking the Frontier Models and why I think Grok 4.5 is the best, and I don’t think it is very close.

My approach takes into consideration the changing reality in the AI space. Frontier Model company’s most recent announcements point to a new chapter in the evolution of AI: the AI industry is entering a new era. The battle is no longer about who has the most capable chatbot. It is about who can build the most effective AI agents, systems that can reason, leverage tools, connect to business data, execute complex tasks, and produce production quality code and produce the greatest value.

Consistent with the new AI era implications, I chose to rank the model’s based on value and the key capabilities mentioned above. Specifically, I ranked Grok, Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT’s latest models on:

In order to rank the models, I either tested the like functionality or researched categories like pricing, token efficiency, and ecosystem openness. As I mentioned earlier, I am a heavy Grok user, but I have taken a number of courses on Claude, Gemini, and ChatGpt so I feel like I was able to objectively and accurately rank the models.

The over results had Grok solely in 1st place in 9 categories, tied for first in 10 categories, tied for 2nd in 1 category and solely in 4th place for 1 category (Computer Use). Although, Grok has the worst Computer Use ranking of the group, I believe that will change by the end of the year or early next year when Grok 5.0 is released. The chart below shows the results:

For brevity sake, I am only including specific examples of some of my analysis comparing Grok to the next best model.

CODING:

For the coding analysis I am presenting the results from Claude Code and Grok. I used the following prompt to create a Landing Page:

Prompt:

Can you create a landing page for an Intermediate Excel training my company Excel Expert is promoting. The cost is $149 and the topics covered are: Data Analysis and Summarization Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts: Group, filter, and summarize large data sets quickly. XLOOKUP and VLOOKUP: Find and pull data from other rows or tables.INDEX and MATCH: Combine two functions for flexible lookups. Advanced Formulas and LogicNested IF Statements: Test multiple conditions in one formula.IFS and SWITCH Functions: Simplify complex, multi-condition formulas. COUNTIFS and SUMIFS: Add or count data based on multiple criteria. Data Control and Quality Data Validation: Create drop-down lists and restrict cell inputs. Conditional Formatting: Highlight cells automatically based on rules. Workspace Management Named Ranges: Label cells and ranges to make formulas easier to read. Basic Tables: Format data as official Excel tables for auto-expansion and structured references. Please include images and a professional color scheme and add a CTA at the end.

Coding Results:

Grok won, at least in my opinion, in all areas including efficiency (2 minutes to 5 minutes), accuracy (no mistakes), images, layout, professionalism of design. Examples of the images and design/accuracy are shown below.

VIDEO:

For the video analysis I am presenting the results from Google Veo and Grok. I used the following prompt and attached 2 images as a reference to create a Marketing Video:

Prompt:

Can you start the video with the image of the balloons and turn the blue balloons red and add 7x in white on the red balloons and red on the white balloons and then pop the balloons and then bring the 7xAI logo in as all red and then fade in the white text.

Google Veo:

Grok:

Key Grok Feature:

The quality of the video and audio in both Veo and Grok are very similar, so the outcome was close. However, Grok has a feature that I don’t believe any of the other models have natively. The models only allow you to generate a few seconds of video, but Grok has a capability to extend the duration of the video from the editor.

Conclusion:

The AI industry is at an inflection point. For the last two years, the debate has centered on which model can answer questions the fastest, score highest on benchmarks, or generate the most impressive demo. Those metrics still matter, but they are rapidly becoming secondary.

The real question is no longer, "Which AI can chat the best?" The question is, "Which AI can create the most value?"

When evaluated through that lens, reasoning, tool use, coding quality, ecosystem openness, agent capabilities, and overall business impact, Grok 4.5 consistently outperformed its competitors across the categories that matter most. While no model is perfect and competitors maintain advantages in specific areas, particularly computer use, Grok demonstrated the strongest overall combination of capability, flexibility, and value creation potential.

The frontier model race is far from over, and today's leader could become tomorrow's follower. However, based on the current generation of models, my conclusion is clear: Grok has emerged as the most capable platform for the agentic AI era. And if upcoming releases deliver on their roadmap, its lead may widen rather than shrink.
